Single’s Guide To Valentine’s Day

When you’re single, Valentine’s Day can often just feel like another day of the year. As a widely-considered romantic holiday, it’s almost commonplace to just bypass it, and wait for the next holiday.

You may see February 14th as that yearly reminder that, “hey, you’re still single.” Or maybe, the fact that it’s Valentine’s Day doesn’t register in your mind much at all because it’s so insignificant to you.

But even though the holiday has such an emphasis on romantic love, we tend to forget to celebrate the other important loves in our life. Because of our busy work schedules or hectic lives, it can prove to be a little tough to remember to tell those you care about that you do, in fact, care.

And that’s where Valentine’s Day can help.

  1. Send out appreciation cards

Nothing feels better, or more thoughtful, than getting a hand-written letter in the mail! There are a lot of people who impact our lives, and mailing letters is an easy way to deliver something so personal to so many people.  When we were in grade school we were so used to handing out obligatory Valentine’s Day cards, and now you can rectify the process by making your words mean something, and sending it to people you care for.

  1. Round up your other single friends and enjoy a night in

On February 14th, even the most hole-in-the-wall restaurants are filled to the brim with couples trying to get their romantic fix. To avoid all of that madness, invite friends over to hang out, eat some good food and enjoy each other’s company. When you join the working world, it’s hard to get all of your friends together. So, if your schedules permit it, use Valentine’s Day as an excuse to simply catch up and be in the same space of some of the people you love.

  1. Plan a day with your family

If there’s anyone you can count on having your back, it’s usually your family. Pay homage to the ones who made your childhood worth-while or helped you grow up into the amazing person who you are today. Whether it has to be conducted over Skype, can be brought to your house or your parents, all you’ll really need is each other’s company.

  1. Volunteer somewhere

A nice perspective palette-cleanser is sometimes reminding yourself that your situation really isn’t that bad. But while the people you’re helping out may have it worse than you, volunteering is far from gloom and doom. In actuality, you get to meet some amazing people, surround yourself with good company and refine your appreciation a bit.

Valentine’s Day, at its core, is about showing your appreciation for those around you. So even if you’re lacking in a romantic partner, you can still spread the wealth and enjoy this holiday as much as the others.
