How To Win Valentine’s Day On The Cheap

When December comes to an end we all breath a collective sigh of relief that the holidays are over and our bank accounts finally can breathe. We rejoice in the fact that we have a good 300-something day buffer in between the next stressful (albeit wonderful) holidays.

And just as we get into the swing of the new year, we sit back, relax, and then remember that Valentine’s Day isn’t too far off and it’s another big gift giving holiday.

You’re still reeling from December and so is your significant other, but you both want to create a memorable day filled with lush scenery and expensive drinks. If an expensive night out doesn’t seem to be in the cards, though, there are still ways you can make the day special without having to spend much.

Here are 5 tips on how to have a great Valentine’s Day on a budget:

  1. Cook dinner instead of going out

Anyone can cook so long as they can follow a recipe. Win some major points in this department by cooking your boyfriend or girlfriend’s favorite meal, and save some money to boot! When you go to a restaurant, you’re paying for the ambiance, service and mood way more than you’re paying for the food. But what’s more romantic than a private date for two with their favorite meal in front of them? Nothing.

  1. Make your own decorations

If you go out somewhere fancy, you’re almost guaranteed the glitz and the glamor… but you can actually create it yourself. Adorn your dinner table with colorful paper flowers and light up the room with inexpensive tealights. Liven up your living space a bit, and we guarantee your home will look just as Instagram-ready as if you blew your paycheck on an extravagant night-out.

  1. DIY your gift

It may be easier to just grab the most expensive thing off of the shelf and call it a day, but it’s more meaningful to create something tailor made for your loved one. Not to mention, it’s a lot cheaper. This may seem intimidating to the design or creativity-challenged, but almost no one knows your boyfriend or girlfriend better than you do. It doesn’t have to be extravagant, you just have to try. Much like cooking your Valentine’s Day dinner or decorating your home, putting the time in is a lot more telling than just buying something you can barely afford.

  1. Get the drinks you can afford with fun mixes

The good thing about most people is that most of us can’t really tell an awesome-wine from a better-than-average one. If you’re dating a wine and beverage connoisseur, then best of luck to you in this department. But for the ones of us who aren’t, don’t feel pressure to get the best of the best. Instead, get what you can afford and then provide fun options to play it up, whether it be Bloody Mary, mojito or margarita mix. Aside from the alcohol, all you’re really buying is juice, which is as cheap as drinks usually come.

  1. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself

Valentine’s Day is one day of the year out of 365. If you’re letting your significant other know how much he or she means to you throughout the year, then Valentine’s Day is more or less just another day to tell your boyfriend or girlfriend “I appreciate you.” Appreciation is hardly the amount of money you spend, and doesn’t come in the form of extravagant dinner-dates. It’s a genuine human connection that should be celebrated, but not glamorized.

However you choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day, if you’re with the one you love and enjoying the company, you’re doing a good job.
